K evin Philip Williams and Michael Guidi — authors of Shrouded in Light: Naturalistic Planting Inspired by Wild Shrublands — are coming to the UK. They open at the Beth Chatto Symposium before taking their case for wild shrublands to gardening clubs and societies across the country.
Williams and Guidi spend their working lives among woody plants. Shrouded in Light, published by Filbert Press in 2024, is their record of why the world's wild shrublands — chaparrals, garrigues, matorrals, fynbos — deserve a place in how we think about cultivated gardens. Photographs, planting ideas and a long argument for paying attention to the species we tend to overlook.
The tour begins at the Beth Chatto Symposium — the biennial gathering at Beth Chatto's gardens in Essex that has become the British convening for ecological planting. From there Kevin and Michael head out on a long itinerary of talks at clubs and horticultural societies — a quiet way of letting the ideas travel through the conversations that already exist rather than landing on top of them.
