Shrouded in Light

Naturalistic Planting Inspired by Wild Shrublands

Now it’s the turn of wild shrublands to stimulate naturalistic planting. Shrubs have a raw beauty, combine well with other plants and are tough which makes them valuable in the garden. Profiling wild shrublands from the USA and beyond, the authors identify the relationships between key plants and offer design insights that will redefine garden-making.

What reviewers said.

  • For anyone who has moved beyond ornamental horticulture and is engaged with ecological approaches to planting, this book is inspirational, and is one that has been sorely lacking from contemporary planting literature, so it is good to see this gap so admirably and enthusiastically filled.

    — Darryl Moore for Garden Design Journal
  • Shrouded in Light is not so much of a book as a deep artistic and horticultural meditation, one that spoils the eyes with breathtaking photos and excites the mind with vibrant descriptions, all the while offering practical ways to incorporate shrubland-esque elements into landscape design

    — Mary Bagazinski for Pacific Horticulture
  • Written by naturalistic gardener Kevin Philip Williams and ecologist Michael Guidi, Shrouded in Light puts shrubs as key players for gardens amidst a changing climate due to their hardiness, adaptability and ability to thrive in arid conditions.

    — Nina Mason for Pro Landscaper
  • …awesome book by @timetomelt and @michael_guidi – profoundly thought-provoking and fun to read, full of art, music and ideas. So refreshing to have this perspective, get a copy from a decent bookshop when you get a chance!

    — Harry Watkins
  • Shrubs are collaborators in our earth stewardship, boldly occupying space in the rapid, inevitable disturbance of human enterprise.

    — Michael Guidi
  • My mind melted the first time I saw a thicket of rabbitbrush and sagebrush shrouded in harsh western American light.

    — Kevin Williams
  • Every now and then, maybe once in a decade, a genuinely revolutionary garden book comes along. This is one.

    — Noel Kingsbury for Gardens Illustrated
